Look up! The Perseid meteor shower is set to light up the night sky

The shower will be visible from July 17th to August 24th

One of the year’s most popular sky events is back. The Perseid meteor shower will light up the night sky from July 17 to August 24, with its peak from August 11 to 13. During that time, stargazers may see up to 100 meteors per hour, weather and darkness permitting.

The meteors come from dust left behind by Comet Swift-Tuttle, which Earth passes through each summer.

No telescope is needed. The best way to see the show is to find a dark, rural spot far from city lights, especially in the Northern Hemisphere. Experts say the best viewing happens after midnight, once your eyes adjust to the darkness.

Even outside the peak dates, some meteors can still be seen on clear nights.

The Perseids have amazed people for over 2,000 years and remain one of the most exciting natural light shows in the sky.
