The land is one of Eastern Ontario’s most important natural areas
The Thousand Islands Watershed Land Trust (TIWLT) has taken a major step toward protecting one of Eastern Ontario’s most important natural areas. The non-profit has secured first right of refusal on the Red Horse Highlands property, a 360-acre site with 2,000 feet of shoreline on Red Horse Lake, next to Charleston Lake Provincial Park.
Located within the Frontenac Arch Biosphere, the property is considered a crucial migratory corridor for wildlife, linking Adirondack National Park with Algonquin Provincial Park. The Highlands extend ecological protection around more than 7,000 acres already conserved by the park, the Nature Conservancy of Canada and TIWLT.
The rugged landscape includes ridges of pink granite, cliffs with scenic lookouts, elevated wetlands, old forest and species at risk. Valued at just over $1.5 million, it represents the largest project in TIWLT’s history.
The trust must raise the balance of funds by Nov. 30. About $600,000 has already been secured.
