MP Michael Barrett discusses the unemployment crisis and food insecurity

A national issue

MP for LGTIRL Michael Barrett says Canada is facing a storm of challenges, from unemployment and food insecurity to a shortage of affordable health care.

With Federal Conservative leader, Pierre Poilievre returning September 15 following his byelection win, Barrett believes the Temporary Foreign Worker Program has only added to the problem.

He pointed to the government’s recent changes, which reduced access to the program while still allowing record numbers of people to arrive through it.

Poilievre has pledged to scrap the program entirely and replace it with a dedicated agricultural labour system.

Barrett says Canadians should not be left without the basics.

He highlighted the need for food at local food banks continues to increase every year.

He stressed that meaningful solutions are needed soon, before the problems worsen.
