New tariffs threaten small businesses — economic commissioner weighs in

Charlie Mignault

As new tariffs take effect across Canada, local economies like those in Eastern Ontario are preparing for challenges ahead.

Charlie Mignault, Commissioner of the St. Lawrence Corridor Economic Development Commission, says small businesses will unfortunately likely feel the brunt of the impact.

Mignault says the rising costs mean businesses must begin sourcing from new markets to survive.

He also stressed how vital it is for communities to support local businesses during this uncertain time.

The Corridor is working on strengthening regional supply chains, and Mignault says there’s hope in how manufacturers are collaborating.

Mignault stated it’s inspiring to see Canadians coming together to get through the disruption — with unity, resilience, and a shared goal of protecting local business.
