OPP cracking down on seatbelt use over Easter long weekend

Ensuring drivers and passengers are buckled up

The Ontario Provincial Police will be watching closely for seatbelt violations this Easter long weekend, April 18 to 21.

Sgt. Ed Sanchuk put out a message to the public yesterday reminding all drivers to be safe.

As part of a province-wide safety campaign, officers will be ensuring drivers and passengers are buckled up properly.

The fine for not wearing a seatbelt is $240 and two demerit points. Children must be secured in the correct car seat, and drivers are responsible for anyone under 16.

While seatbelt use is the campaign’s main focus, the OPP will also target the “Big 4” collision causes: impaired driving, distracted driving, aggressive driving, and lack of seatbelt use.

Police say a seatbelt offers the best chance of survival in a crash. It only takes a second to buckle up-and it could save your life.

The OPP encourages everyone to drive safely and enjoy the holiday weekend responsibly. Officers will be visible across the region during the campaign.
