International Overdose Awareness Day being marked today beside City Hall
Deaths linked to overdoses and drug poisonings are climbing in Leeds, Grenville and Lanark, according to the South East Health Unit.
So far in 2025, there have been three confirmed and probable overdose deaths and 13 suspected deaths. In 2024, the number rose to 18 confirmed and 36 suspected deaths. Public health officials call the situation alarming and stress that overdoses are preventable.
The health unit works with a wide network of local partners to address the crisis. These include community health centres, addiction treatment programs, shelters, emergency services, police, mental health agencies, food banks, libraries, youth groups and pharmacies.
Harm reduction is a key strategy. It helps reduce overdose deaths, lowers the risk of HIV and Hepatitis C, and supports participation in treatment programs. SEHU provides Naloxone kits, training, safer use supplies, education and needle drop boxes.
International Overdose Awareness Day will be marked today with a community event beside Brockville City Hall until 3 p.m.
