The policy is now in it's second year
English-language public schools in the district are once again enforcing a strict cellphone ban during class time.
The policy, now in its second year, was introduced in 2024 by former Ontario Education Minister Stephen Lecce. It bans all cellphone use during instructional time.
Students in Kindergarten to Grade 6 must keep phones silent and out of sight all day. Grades 7 to 12 may keep their phones but can only use them during class with teacher permission.
The Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) is following the provincial directive and has reminded parents of the rules.
Report cards now include comments about students’ distraction levels.
Social media sites like TikTok and Instagram are blocked on school Wi-Fi and wired networks, though students can still access them through personal data.
The province says the ban is meant to help students stay focused, improve learning, and support better mental health.
Exceptions may be made for medical or special education needs.
