A temporary federal bridge continues to restrict boat traffic, affecting marinas, restaurants, tourism operators, and seasonal workers across Eastern Ontario
Ontario MPP Steve Clark has launched a petition asking the federal government to restore full navigation at Kingston’s Lasalle Causeway before the 2026 boating season.
A temporary modular bridge was installed in October last year after the causeway suffered a bridge break. The structure allows cars and pedestrians through but restricts boats.
Local MP Michael Barrett explained the problems with the temporary bridge.
Barrett also explained why the petition matters.
Clark tabled the petition at Queen’s Park, calling on Ottawa to build a structure that lets all boats pass through the causeway.
He noted that 2026 marks 200 years since construction began on the UNESCO-designated waterway.
Clark said communities fear another season of blocked navigation, warning hundreds of businesses and jobs are at risk.
Barrett summed up their request.
Corinna Smith-Gatcke, Warden of Leeds and Grenville, said urgent action is needed to protect tourism and mark the canal’s anniversary.
