Brockville Police say they are not leading the removal of homeless encampments, but stepping in only when asked by property owners under the Trespass to Property Act.
Two encampments are currently involved — one near the Salvation Army on First Avenue and another on Hubbell Street, owned by Career Services. Police say their role is to keep the peace and ensure safety while working closely with outreach groups.
Community agencies, including the City of Brockville, United Counties of Leeds and Grenville, and the John Howard Society, are offering support to people in the camps. Those affected have been given several weeks to relocate, with outreach workers visiting regularly to help.
Police stress they do not want to enforce these removals but say it’s sometimes necessary for legal and safety reasons. The issue, they note, reflects a broader crisis facing cities across Ontario and Canada, not just Brockville.
