Organizers praised the students' work and hope Vanier's environmental projects will inspire other schools across the region
A group of Brockville students is proving that making a difference for the environment can start right in the schoolyard.
Vanier Public School’s Eco Warriors Club has received an award from the Brockville Rotary Club and Thousand Islands Watershed Land Trust for its student-led conservation work.
The recognition, presented Oct. 30, marks the first time the organizations have honoured an elementary school for environmental conservation.
Over the past three years, students have planted more than 100 native trees, shrubs and seedlings on school property, helping create shade and habitats for wildlife.
Their efforts have also influenced the Upper Canada District School Board to add several native species to its approved planting list.
Students have since created a pollinator garden, providing food and shelter for bees, butterflies and other pollinators.
Organizers praised the students' work and hope Vanier's environmental projects will inspire other schools across the region.
