Feral cats at Lansdowne waste site could cost township thousands

Council must choose an option, with any program costs covered by the waste site's operating budget

The Township of Leeds and the Thousand Islands is considering spending thousands of dollars to control feral cats living at its Lansdowne waste disposal site.

A staff report presented to council on Tuesday outlines three options, including leaving the cats alone, neutering and returning them, or combining the program with adoption efforts.

Staff estimate three to five cats remain at the site, although volunteers believe the number could reach 10 or more. Feral cats have lived there for more than a decade.

The proposed trap-neuter-return program could cost up to $500 per cat, with initial expenses estimated at $2,500 to $5,000 or more.

Township staff say feeding cats and providing shelters could attract other wildlife and breach site operating requirements. Unauthorized volunteer activities have included removing pest-control bait stations.

Council must choose an option, with any program costs covered by the waste site's operating budget. No decision is specified in the report.
