A newcomer who built a thriving grocery store after moving to Canada is among the business owners honoured at a sold-out Small Business Success Forum in Brockville.

Meet Prajapati, owner of SWAGAT Indian Grocery Store, received the Leeds and Grenville Immigrant Entrepreneur Award on Wednesday. Since arriving from India 12 years ago, he has built a business selling Indian foods and spices while supporting newcomer families and the local food bank.

Nicole Hudson, co-owner of Katarina’s Coffee Shop in Prescott, received the Leeds Grenville Entrepreneur of the Year Award. The business, run with her mother, Carla, serves meals, baked goods and specialty products.

The Oct. 22 forum marked Small Business Week under the theme “Grit, Growth and Greatness.” Eleven entrepreneurs also graduated from the Starter Company Plus program, which provides business training, coaching and access to grants of up to $5,000.
