With Dancy now set to lead the township, Athens is looking ahead to a new chapter

After more than 20 years under Mayor Herb Scott, Athens Township is entering a new era with former councillor Anne Marie Dancy taking over as mayor.

Dancy ran against Ray Heffernan, an Athens resident who had never previously served on municipal council. She won with more than 70 per cent of the vote.

Dancy talks about why she chose to run for mayor of Athens.

Dancy talks about her top priorities after she is sworn in on Nov. 16.

She also said she wants to advocate for seniors at the United Counties level.

Dancy said she never imagined getting involved in municipal politics 20 years ago, but that changed over time. Her father-in-law, John Dancy, also served as reeve of Athens and warden of the United Counties. He passed away in January, but she said she continues to feel his support.

Dancy served as a councillor during the last term before deciding to run for mayor.

She said her four years on council taught her a lot, but there is always more to learn.

In Athens, 37 per cent of eligible voters cast ballots in this year's municipal election. That is up from 22 per cent in 2022, although there is still room for improvement.

Dancy said the decision not to send out voter information cards hurt turnout.

Dancy said residents can expect to see her out in the community more often, as she enjoys getting involved and getting things done.

She encourages residents to talk with her and share their concerns. She also wants to introduce a suggestion box to make it easier for people to provide feedback.

Dancy said she wants to hear from everyone, adding that listening to residents is how things get done and improvements are made.
