Anyone who believes they have been targeted by fraud should contact their local police service and report the incident to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre
A phone call that appears to come from a bank could be a fraud attempt, the Ontario Provincial Police are warning.
Police say fraudsters are impersonating financial institution representatives and claiming suspicious activity has been detected on victims’ accounts. The callers then try to persuade people to share personal or banking information.
The scam can involve spoofed phone numbers and fake websites, making the calls appear legitimate.
The OPP East Region is urging the public not to trust caller ID alone or share personal details, banking information or security codes with unexpected callers.
Anyone who receives a suspicious call claiming to be from their bank should hang up and contact the financial institution directly using the phone number printed on the back of their bank card.
Police also advise people to avoid clicking links sent by unsolicited callers, regularly monitor their accounts and report suspicious activity immediately.
Anyone who believes they have been targeted by fraud should contact their local police service and report the incident to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
