Augusta Township Deputy Mayor Adrian Wynands says this year’s extreme summer heat has devastated crops across the region.
He explained that while recent rainfall has helped revive gardens, it won’t undo the widespread damage in local fields.
With temperatures soaring above 40 degrees with the humidex and very little rainfall, greenery and crops had little chance to survive.
He added that even more rain now will not be enough to bring the season’s crops back to life.
Corn and soybeans have been among the hardest hit, leaving many farmers with smaller harvests this fall.
For many in agriculture, the difficult season is a reminder of how quickly extreme weather can change the outlook for local farms.
