Council’s general committee backed the plan last week
Brockville city council will vote tonight on whether to spend more than $400,000 on a high-tech public washroom for the downtown waterfront.
The proposed modular, self-cleaning facility would be installed at Market Street West and Water Street, replacing a vacant lot where old buildings were demolished in 2022. The prefabricated design includes vandal-proof construction, remote monitoring, and automatic disinfection systems.
Council’s general committee backed the plan last week, with members saying the more durable unit could save staff time and repair costs caused by frequent vandalism and misuse of existing washrooms across city parks.
Mayor Matt Wren and Coun. Jane Fullarton supported pre-approving the expense before the 2026 budget to speed up installation.
Coun. Phil Deery, while voting in favour, expressed “sticker shock” at the price tag, which will exceed $400,000 once electrical upgrades are included. The full council will make the final decision this evening.
