Brockville police and community partners have cleared two homeless encampments behind The Salvation Army on First Avenue and Career Services on Hubbell Street.
The wooded sites had grown over time, raising concerns about public health, fire safety and community well-being. Garbage piles, suspected stolen property, disturbances and violence created risks for both occupants and nearby residents.
To address the situation, representatives from The Salvation Army, Career Services, the United Counties of Leeds and Grenville, John Howard Society, Lanark Leeds Grenville Mental Health and Addictions, and Brockville Police coordinated a joint response. For more than two weeks, they visited the sites regularly, offered support and posted closure notices.
On Wednesday (Oct. 1), the encampments were cleared. Officers gave residents time to collect belongings, and no arrests were made. Officials said the approach emphasized patience and professionalism. Cleanup is now underway, with property managers facing severe conditions and costly labour.
