Avoid running generators or vehicles inside garages, and never use BBQs indoors
Carbon Monoxide Awareness Week is underway through Saturday, November 7, and Melanie Jones, Fire Chief at the Brockville Fire Department, is urging residents to take precautions against the deadly gas.
Carbon monoxide (CO) is a colourless, odourless and tasteless gas produced when fuels like natural gas, wood, propane or gasoline do not burn completely.
It can build up in enclosed spaces and cause serious illness or death.
Jones explains why carbon monoxide awareness is especially important in the fall and winter.
Under the Ontario Fire Code, working CO alarms are required in all homes with fuel-burning appliances, fireplaces or attached garages.
Failure to comply can result in fines.
Jones also explained some of the symptoms of CO exposure.
If a CO alarm sounds, residents should leave immediately and call 9-1-1.
Avoid running generators or vehicles inside garages, and never use BBQs indoors.
