The Brockville Fire Department is reminding residents that apartment fire safety starts with prevention and being prepared before an emergency happens.
Here’s Fire Chief Melanie Jones on the rules surrounding carbon monoxide and smoke alarms.
Here’s Jones with some more apartment fire safety tips.
Jones also talks about what to do if there is a fire in your unit.
The department says if there is a fire outside a unit, residents should stay inside if it is safer to do so, seal the door if possible, block vents, keep a phone nearby, and call 911 immediately if they cannot escape.
Jones also reminds residents to approach every door with caution and stay low because the air is cleaner near the floor.
She said most apartment fires are caused by kitchen fires and smoking.
Jones added that warnings are issued first for fire code violations, but fines can follow if problems such as missing or non-working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are not corrected.
