The event hopes to bring the community together to honour those who served for our freedom
The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 96 will host a Battle of Vimy Ridge commemoration Thursday at its cenotaph on Park Street.
The Battle of Vimy Ridge, which took place 109 years ago, plays a significant role in Canada’s history, and organizer Dave Cody from the Brockville Legion underscored that with key facts.
Cody says the battle marked the first time all four divisions of the Canadian Corps fought together as one force.
Cody also says Capt. Thain MacDowell, honoured at the Legion’s upper hall, played a key role in the battle.
McDowall received both the Victoria Cross and the Distinguished Service Order for his actions.
The 1917 battle saw Canadian troops capture a heavily defended German ridge in France after years of failed Allied attempts, helping shape Canada’s national identity.
Cody discussed what will be going on at the event.
The event hopes to bring the community together to honour those who served for our freedom.
