The Recorder and Times reports that Brockville council narrowly rejected a request to fly the Palestinian flag behind City Hall, ending a tense debate at its Tuesday meeting. The motion, brought forward by Coun. Cameron Wales, fell in a tie vote after councillors split over whether the city should raise a flag connected to an ongoing international conflict.
According to the Recorder and Times, the Brockville Peace Collective asked that the flag be flown from Nov. 27 to Dec. 1 to mark the anniversary of the Palestinian declaration of independence. The group said it followed the same process used for other international flags, including the Ukrainian flag.
Some councillors argued the flag would show support for local residents, while others, including Coun. Phil Deery, said municipal property should not be used to signal positions on global disputes.
