Anyone who believes they have received counterfeit money is asked not to pass it on to someone else
The Brockville Police Service is warning residents and businesses after seeing an increase in counterfeit Canadian currency being used in the community.
Police say fake money can hurt both businesses and individuals, and are encouraging people to take a few seconds to check cash before accepting it.
The service is reminding the public to feel the bill for its unique texture, hold it up to the light to check that the portrait looks the same from both sides, and tilt it to see if the metallic strip changes colour and appears to move.
Police also advise closely examining the detailed texture and clear shapes on the bill. If available, an ultraviolet light can help reveal hidden coloured patterns that counterfeit bills often lack.
Anyone who believes they have received counterfeit money is asked not to pass it on to someone else. Instead, Brockville Police say it should be reported immediately by calling 613-342-0127 or 911 in an emergency.
