Barrett, a former member of the Canadian Armed Forces, said reserve units play a key role in domestic operations and national defence
Local Conservative MP Michael Barrett and Defence Minister David McGuinty visited the Brockville Rifles reserve infantry regiment on Wednesday, highlighting concerns about readiness and equipment during a period of uncertainty.
Barrett, the MP for Leeds—Grenville—Thousand Islands—Rideau Lakes, arranged the visit after raising operational needs facing local reserve units. He has argued Canada must be able to defend its land, waters and skies without relying on other countries.
During the visit, Barrett and McGuinty met with Brockville Rifles and Canadian Army 33rd Brigade leadership, received briefings on unit operations and toured the historic Brockville Armouries. They also spoke directly with serving members about recruitment pressures and training challenges.
Barrett, a former member of the Canadian Armed Forces, said reserve units play a key role in domestic operations and national defence. He has called for long-delayed investments to ensure soldiers can serve safely.
The Brockville Rifles are a longstanding part of the Brockville community and Army Reserve.
