Cigarette butts can be more dangerous than you would think
The Brockville Fire Department is reminding residents that smoking is still a leading cause of deadly house fires — and every one of them is preventable.
To reduce the risk, fire crews are sharing simple safety tips for anyone who smokes at home, on balconies, or outdoors.
Smokers are asked to use deep, sturdy ashtrays and never flick butts into gardens or off balconies. Cigarette butts should be soaked in water before being thrown away.
Officials also say to never smoke in bed or while tired, and to keep all smoking materials away from kids, pets, and oxygen tanks. Working smoke alarms should be installed on every level of your home.
The department says fire prevention is a shared responsibility and encourages people to take fire safety seriously.
