Front of Yonge Township’s plan to install two speed cameras in Mallorytown has been stalled by Ontario’s proposal to ban automated speed enforcement.
The township had been working for about five months on the project after years of public complaints about speeding in the village. Local OPP supported the effort but said staffing limits made enforcement difficult.
The Ford government recently announced its intention to eliminate speed cameras, calling them a financial burden on drivers. Since 2019, more than 700 cameras have been set up in over 40 municipalities across Ontario.
At its Oct. 14 meeting, Front of Yonge council voted to send a letter to Premier Doug Ford urging him to reconsider.
Planned locations include a school zone near Front of Yonge Elementary and a site on Quabbin Road.
Council says the cameras are about safety, not revenue, and hopes provincial opposition can be reversed.
