Respiratory illness activity is high across Leeds, Grenville and Lanark, according to the South East Public Health (SEPH) unit. In a notice issued December 16, the health unit urged residents to take simple steps to reduce the spread of illness and protect vulnerable people.
SEPH advised people to stay home and avoid close contact with others when feeling unwell. Regular handwashing, keeping vaccinations up to date and covering the mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing were also highlighted as key prevention measures.
The health unit recommended disinfecting frequently touched surfaces at home and in the workplace, including door handles, counters and shared equipment. Wearing a mask while recovering from an illness was encouraged to help protect others in public settings.
SEPH said these everyday actions can help reduce pressure on the health-care system during periods of increased respiratory illness. More information and guidance are available through the health unit’s website.
