A high-impact ice storm continues to affect Brockville and Prescott this morning, with strong winds expected to add to the danger later today.
Environment Canada says freezing rain is ongoing, with ice accretion of 15 to 20 millimetres possible on some surfaces. The freezing rain is expected to taper to patchy freezing drizzle or rain this morning before changing to flurries this afternoon.
Roads, sidewalks and walkways are expected to be icy and slippery, making travel hazardous. Officials warn some routes could become impassable, with significant impacts possible during the morning commute. Prolonged power outages are also considered likely.
In addition to the ice, strong winds are forecast to develop later this morning as a cold front moves through the region. Southwesterly winds are expected to shift to northwesterly winds through the afternoon, with gusts reaching up to 70 kilometres per hour. Winds are expected to ease tonight.
Officials say the combination of heavy ice and strong winds increases the risk of downed trees, power lines and property damage.
Residents are urged to avoid non-essential travel and continue monitoring weather alerts and forecasts for updates.
