Barrett said the project would “cut through, but not serve” the community
Local MP Michael Barrett continues to oppose the Alto high-speed rail project after Kingston was considered as a potential stop on the proposed route between Toronto and Quebec City.
The move was announced last week as part of ongoing route planning.
The $90 billion plan has faced criticism from Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre and other opponents who question its scale and cost.
MP Michael Barrett said the project would “cut through, but not serve” the community.
He said he hasn’t heard anyone in our community supporting the project.
Barrett instead suggested investments in the current VIA Rail line would bring more practical benefits.
Federal officials say the rail line could improve travel times and regional connectivity, including links between Kingston, Ottawa and Toronto, but critics warn added stops could slow service and increase costs.
The project remains under review following public consultations, with final route decisions expected after further technical and environmental analysis.
