Community programs at the Brockville Public Library are helping residents improve their mental health through social connection and shared activities.
We spoke with Becka, a relatively new mother who has found success in the Baby Bookworms Program, which offers songs, rhymes and stories for babies from birth to 12 months old along with their caregivers.
She explains how she originally got involved with the program.
She talks about how the program has helped improve her mental health.
The library’s Mahjong program is also creating a sense of community. The Chinese tile-based game combines strategy, skill and luck.
Marie, who regularly attends the Mahjong program, talked about the benefits she’s found since she joined.
Arthur, who is semi-retired, said the weekly games give him something to look forward to and have vastly improved his social connections.
Participants agreed the programs create a welcoming environment and help reduce feelings of isolation.
The library also offers chess clubs, sewing programs, several community book clubs and much more.
The library is located at 23 Buell St. in Brockville and interested residents can visit the Brockville Public Library website for more details.
