A fast-moving fire gutted two homes and damaged another on Brock Street Thursday evening, displacing about 10 people in a neighbourhood hit by past blazes.
Brockville firefighters responded to the call at about 5:20 p.m., arriving within minutes from a nearby station and later receiving help from Elizabethtown-Kitley crews.
Police said a bystander flagged down an officer on patrol, who ran into a burning home and rescued a sleeping man before firefighters arrived. The man was taken to hospital, and paramedics reported no serious injuries.
Authorities believe all residents are accounted for. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but police said it is not believed to be suspicious. The Ontario Fire Marshal is expected to assist.
The blaze sent heavy smoke over the area and forced the evacuation of neighbouring homes. It was not immediately clear whether any animals were inside at the time.
