Ontario Provincial Police are warning residents in the East Region to stay alert after reports of distraction thefts in local communities. Police say the incidents happen quickly and often involve suspects who start conversations, show fake kindness, or offer gifts to distract victims before stealing jewelry or other valuables.
While seniors are often targeted, police say anyone can become a victim. The OPP advises the public to be cautious when strangers enter personal space and to avoid accepting unsolicited gifts or jewelry. Residents are also urged to trust their instincts, leave uncomfortable situations, and keep valuables secure while limiting visible jewelry in public.
Anyone who is approached suspiciously or believes they have been a victim should contact the OPP at 1-888-310-1122. Fraud or attempted scams can also be reported to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre online for assistance.
