Police say the incidents happen quickly and often involve suspects who start conversations, show fake kindness, or offer gifts to distract victims before stealing jewelry or other valuables.
While seniors are often targeted, police say anyone can become a victim. The OPP advises the public to be cautious when strangers enter personal space and to avoid accepting unsolicited gifts or jewelry. Residents are also urged to trust their instincts, leave uncomfortable situations, and keep valuables secure while limiting visible jewelry in public.
