Ontario targets fentanyl and speeds up police record checks in new safety bill

Other proposed changes include stronger transit safety enforcement and more

The Ontario government has introduced the Protecting Ontario’s Streets and Communities Act, 2026, legislation aimed at strengthening public safety and giving police more tools to fight crime across the province.

Solicitor General Michael Kerzner said the province is cracking down on precursor chemicals used to make dangerous drugs like fentanyl and carfentanil.

The proposed legislation would also help reduce delays for vulnerable and police sector record checks used for employment and volunteer positions.

The province says police services could partner with other departments to help process applications faster.

Kerzner said none of that would be evident to the applicant.

He said the goal is to make the system simple and seamless for anyone applying.

The legislation also includes measures targeting human trafficking and illegal tow truck activity.

Other proposed changes include stronger transit safety enforcement, tougher animal welfare protections and a provincial website warning the public about high-risk offenders.
