Police continue to urge drivers to postpone non-essential travel, slow down, leave extra space, turn on full headlights, and stay alert during winter storms
Ontario Provincial Police are warning drivers to slow down and adjust their driving as winter collisions continue across eastern Ontario, including along Highway 401.
The OPP's Bill Dickson shared with myFM many recent crashes, including several involving transport trucks, were caused by drivers failing to change their behaviour during winter conditions.
Police say speed and following too closely are major factors, especially during snow squalls that can quickly reduce visibility. Dickson said conditions along the 401 corridor can deteriorate in seconds, leading to chain-reaction crashes involving dozens of vehicles.
“You can go from a bright sunny day to a whiteout in no time flat,” he said.
Dickson explained that long highway closures are sometimes necessary to safely remove vehicles, clear snow, and protect emergency crews and tow operators.
