Storm surge warning raises water levels along upper St. Lawrence River shoreline

Officials will continue monitoring conditions and updating advisories as needed locally

Cataraqui Conservation has issued a shoreline conditions statement warning of short-term high water levels along Lake Ontario and the upper St. Lawrence River due to a storm surge.

Sustained southwest winds of 40 to 60 km/h are expected today and Friday, pushing water levels higher. Officials say peak levels could reach 75.70 metres in Kingston, Gananoque and surrounding shoreline areas.

Elevated water is expected from this afternoon until Saturday morning before gradually falling as winds weaken. Some properties may see minor flooding and erosion, and fixed docks could become partially submerged during the surge.

Widespread flooding is not expected, but residents near shorelines are advised to use caution and monitor local updates from municipalities and Cataraqui Conservation. Sandbag locations are available in several communities including Kingston, Brockville, Gananoque and Leeds and the Thousand Islands.

Officials will continue monitoring conditions and updating advisories as needed locally.
