This small group plays a critical role in saving lives
Canadian Blood Services is asking Canadians with O-negative blood to donate immediately as hospitals face high demand this summer.
O-negative blood is known as the universal blood type because it can be safely given to any patient, especially in emergencies when there’s no time to confirm blood type.
Only 7 per cent of Canadians have O-negative blood, but this small group plays a critical role in saving lives.
Donors who know they are O-negative are encouraged to book an appointment or visit a donor centre right away. Bringing a family member who may also be O-negative can help double the impact.
Hospitals have enough blood for now, but the supply could drop quickly without more donations.
Canadian Blood Services reminds everyone—regardless of blood type—to donate this summer.
Book an appointment at blood.ca, use the GiveBlood app, or call 1-888-2-DONATE to help keep Canada’s blood supply strong.
