Canadian Blood Services is asking Canadians with O-negative blood to donate immediately as hospitals face high demand this summer.
O-negative blood is known as the universal blood type because it can be safely given to any patient, especially in emergencies when there’s no time to confirm blood type.
Only 7 per cent of Canadians have O-negative blood, but this small group plays a critical role in saving lives.
Donors who know they are O-negative are encouraged to book an appointment or visit a donor centre right away. Bringing a family member who may also be O-negative can help double the impact.
Hospitals have enough blood for now, but the supply could drop quickly without more donations.
