Mayor Brant Burrow said the timing of the complaint, filed July 15, means council must deal with it before the municipal election
A meeting tonight (Aug. 20) could decide whether Elizabethtown-Kitley Coun. Rob Smith loses 30 days of pay over comments he made about staff.
The township’s integrity commissioner recommended the penalty after finding Smith told staff and residents that he would fire a number of employees if elected mayor in October.
The report said Smith cited concerns about work performance and staff allegedly acting without keeping council informed.
Smith told CBC News he accepts the findings and considers the recommended penalty reasonable. He also said he “absolutely” regrets his comments and would start with a clean slate if elected.
The meeting is scheduled for tonight at the township offices and will be available online.
Smith is running for mayor and is facing Coun. Henry Oosterhof.
